Since 2019, August 16th has been recognized as National Independent Worker Day. With millions of freelancers, independent contractors, and solopreneurs contributing to the economy, independent workers are an essential part of the U.S. workforce. This day honors the creativity, flexibility, and resilience of those who choose to work independently.
Over the years, the independent workforce has grown and evolved, encompassing a wide range of professions and industries. From writers to graphic designers to coaches and consultants to social media influencers, independent workers embody the spirit of innovation and self-sufficiency each and every day.
According to recent polls, 56 million Americans are independent workers. These individuals contribute significantly to the economy. In 2018 alone, independent workers added $1.3 trillion
to the U.S. GDP – and this number continues to increase each year!
If you are an independent worker, your work may be “independent” but you do not have to do
everything alone. Professionals are here to help! For example, attorneys support independent
workers with a wide range of legal services, including:
Contracts Law: Your business relationships are contractual in nature. An attorney can prepare, review, and even negotiate your contracts, including collaboration agreements, referral agreements, scopes/statements of work, and services agreements.
Employment & Labor Law: Your contractual relationships might be affected by various
employment and labor laws. An attorney can help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a worker, including those related to discrimination, non-competition, and payment.
Intellectual Property Law: Your work product potentially creates intellectual property rights of some sort. An attorney can help you establish, protect, and enforce your intellectual property rights, including copyright, patent, and trademark.
In addition to attorneys, many other types of providers support independent workers with essential professional services. As needed, be sure to enlist the help of trusted professionals, such as accountants and HR consultants.
National Independent Worker Day honors independent workers and recognizes their contributions to our nation’s economy. We are proud to celebrate your dedication, determination, diligence, and drive!
