Client Alert: Repeal of North Carolina Privilege License Tax

Written by N'kia

Important Client Alert! The North Carolina Department of Revenue (“NCDOR”) has announced a significant change that will impact many business owners across the state. Effective July 1, 2024, the longstanding requirement for certain businesses to obtain a privilege license has been repealed. This repeal marks the end of an era for the privilege license tax, which had been a staple in North Carolina’s tax code for decades.

Previously, businesses operating in specific professions—such as attorneys, accountants, architects, and other professional services—were required to obtain an annual privilege license from the NCDOR. The license served as a prerequisite for legally conducting business within the state, and failure to comply could result in penalties.

With this repeal, many professional businesses are no longer obligated to apply for or renew a privilege license. However, the requirement remains in place for a few businesses, including check cashers, loan agents, and pawnbrokers.

The repeal reflects North Carolina's ongoing efforts to simplify its tax code and reduce the administrative burden on businesses. For many business owners, this change translates to less paperwork and one less annual fee to worry about.

While the privilege license requirement may no longer apply to you, it is essential to stay informed about other local and state regulations that may apply to your business. We recommend reviewing your compliance obligations to ensure your business remains in good standing.
